Ameritrade and Datek announced that they are merging. I always wanted Datek to go public so that I could buy shares in the company. That feeling was especially strong back in the day when every Tom, Dick, and Harry was point and clicking his way to instant riches.

Now that folks won't even visit their online brokers for fear of seeing their decimated portfolios, I have a different perspective on the industry. No doubt stock market fever will strike again... but who knows when?

As a long-time Datek customer I have always admired their technology (their website and Datek Direct are both great) and the competence and speed of their customer service; I hope they're able to maintain the young, dynamic, entrepreneurial culture that makes me a happy customer.
