I spent a couple of hours this afternoon at the John Addis Islamic Gallery in the British Museum. I was prompted to go
there after reading about the looting and
trashing of the Iraq National Museum in Baghdad and feeling very sad about it. It's such a horrible, inexplicable crime... a tragic waste. (An article by Souren Melikian in the Herald Tribune
in early March warning about the time in Iraq when "thieves clear out museums [and] looters dig up archaeological sites.")
A word on how I visit museums: I go with a very specific purpose in mind. Huge museums like the British Museum or the National Gallery
or the Met in New York are just so overwhelming that I find it best to go with one thing in mind and ignore everything else. In smaller
museums like the Tate Modern it is possible to look carefully at the entire permanent collection in a day's time. Special exhibitions
should always be viewed separately. That's the best way I've found to do it.
