An Agile, Energetic Government?

Why China Won’t Slow Down, by Albert Keidel

This piece made me wince, especially near the end where he writes “[China’s] political system… is… nimble and robust.” I think Gordon Chang got it right when he wrote in The Coming Collapse of China:

“China’s economic miracle is nothing more than the state letting the Chinese be Chinese. The government hasn’t created anything; it has just gotten out of the way.”

Chang also predicted that the communist government will fail within 5 years. That was 2001, now it is 2006. The Chinese government is strong as ever.

AK47: True. Nevertheless he got a lot of other things right in his (highly repetitive) book.
