Baby T at Two

Baby T recently turned two. He’s a big, strong kid. (I don’t know how big exactly — I’m not one of those parents who pays attention to percentiles.) He still has a remarkably sweet disposition (not entered the “terrible two’s” yet, I guess).

He doesn’t talk much, but he understands everything: English & Mandarin (parents), Shanghainese (grandparents), Shandongese (nanny), Sichuanese (cook), Beijingese (driver), and a slew of Yiddish swear words (Uncle Morty). He has an excellent memory and appears to be sharp (takes after his mom, obviously). He also has great balance. ;-)

Did anyone mention that he looks exactly like you?

gary: No, they all say he looks exactly like his mother (which he does).

How are his toxic stinger, web shooter powers? Either he’s holding back on us, or he hasn’t learned about the middle-and-ring fingers trigger.

Steve: He’s not (yet) familiar with the franchise. ;-)

hey…he is wearing the same sleeping dress as my six year old…seems like all little boys all over the world are fascinated by the same supranational heros…triumph of the popculture

Great photo, one for posterity. Is the T for ‘Trader’? I’m looking for a money manager.

He’s so cute. Are you going to have a second child soon?

Mr. X: T is for Thomas.

agg: I’d like to but my wife is less enthusiastic… this is why I’m actively searching for a mistress. ;-)

I was born in Brazil of Shanghainese parents, so I speak Portunese… hahaha..
Portuguese is my first language. I can speak a little Shanghainese and somewhat understand mandarin.
BTW, where/how did you learn mandarin?
    Makes me feel embarassed ;(

  10. C. Maoxian said:

Michael: I studied Mandarin in college and spent my junior year abroad in China. I also did a year of post-grad study at the Hopkins Center in Nanjing.

Did your parents speak Shanghainese at home or Portuguese? People tell me it’s not unusual for kids growing up in a multilingual environment to start talking “late.”

CM: Wow, that’s very impressive! I’m sure the Chinese girls there are impressed as well. hehehe… In my teenage years, my parents forced me to study mandarin, but that didn’t last long. I was wondering, what the heck am I going to do with mandarin in Brazil? Boy, was I wrong. I deeply regret it. So now, my youngest daughter is studying mandarin. No negotiation here.

My parents spoke both languages as I was growing. Not only that, I also studied in an American school from K thru 4th grade, so I’m still learning how to talk… ;o)

Michael: I speak English with all the young (under 35) professional people I deal with here, including my girlfriends. I don’t know a single Chinese-American kid who enjoyed the compulsive Mandarin study their parents forced on them. Baby T may go to an international school here; we’re still torn about what to do about his education.

Happy Birthday, my nickname for him will be Green T - now he just needs some Green Lantern pajamas.

CM: Correction. My daughter does go to an American school here in the US, but she is taking private Mandarin lessons once a week. She’s also taking Japanese at school and next year she’s going to honors class.

  16. C. Maoxian said:

Michael: As long as she’s genuinely interested, then it’s great. I chose Chinese over both Japanese and Arabic when given the choice in college. If I were fluent in Arabic I’d probably be one of the eight Americans at the Embassy in Iraq who speaks the language. ;-)
