Do Bear and Bond Fund Reversals Mean the Bottom Is In?

I didn’t have time to put out a complete copy of my new ETF newsletter this weekend (sorry about that), but I did look through the most active bear funds and found that eight out of eleven of them gave sell signals:

  • QID ~ Last Price 64.68 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 9/8/2008 at 46.23
  • SDS ~ Last Price 84.19 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 6/23/2008 at 63.01
  • SKF ~ Last Price 124.38 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 10/6/2008 at 119
  • DXD ~ Last Price 70.32 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 5/27/2008 at 53.67
  • TWM ~ Last Price 95.75 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 10/6/2008 at 90.52
  • SMN ~ Last Price 70.20 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 6/30/2008 at 28.60
  • FXP ~ Last Price 89.00 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 5/27/2008 at 71.25
  • EEV ~ Last Price 86.90 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 8/18/2008 at 91.38

Also the Long Bond fund (TLT) reversed:

  • TLT ~ Last Price 92.83 ~ Sell on 11/3/2008 at open ~ Bought on 6/16/2008 at 89.11

I’m not sure if this means a major bottom is in place, but it’s something for readers to consider. Drop me an email if you want to join the newsletter list — I hope to get a complete copy out next weekend.

Ya mean I can keep my GE? Great. If it is selling SFK, is it buying XLF?

  2. C. Maoxian said:

@Hudson: The model would never have bought GE where I thought it was a “bargain” — it’s a trend-following model and doesn’t consider “valuation.” And no, selling SKF doesn’t necessarily mean it’s buying XLF.

How were those signals generated? Does that mean you made a profit in some of those funds?

I trust The Chairman will understand why I was unable to finish the email. I was so overcome with anger at the mention of credit default swaps, which, as Warren Buffett warned years ago, were potential “weapons of financial mass destruction,” I had to attend to the cabinet for a “little drink,” which eventually evolved into a lot of little drinks.

Meanwhile, it is my considered opinion that if BO takes the oath on Jan. 20, 09, many biotechology, biomedical, however one cares to categorize them, companies, will be primary beneficiaries of a renewed interest in scientific research and advancement.

If it happens, I’m loading up on shares of every biotechnology ETF on the planet’s stock markets.

For all I care, George and his wife can start packing today and head back to the ranch in Crawford to raise free range turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, peacocks, ostriches, a couple of platypus, any creature capable of laying a goddamn egg.

And then George can invite Dick and Carl and Alan to come down for a weekend and go suck on ‘em for all I care.

    @moo & Dennis: It’s a trend-following system, not a Black Box. I won’t reveal the exact formula.
