I’ve Owned Amgen for Seven Years…
and haven’t made a dime or been paid a dividend. Guess I overpaid for it. - Sigh -

set it free

I suffered with that one for a while. It’s got a neat story and a mediocre pipeline. A least a boring big pharma will pay you a dividend and do the low beta thing.
Some smart people just don’t fool around with healthcare stocks at all. I’m kind of coming around to that, eyeing my NVS uneasily.

Michael: Maybe it will get the boot during the quarterly review my wife has instituted (out of disgust, lol).
Brian: Yeah, I have a lot of Big Pharma stocks too, but I’m now happiest making periodic deposits into the XLV.

I agree with Michael “set it free”. I am surprised you did not have some sort of stop-loss in place when you bought it. It looks like you would have had a draw down of about 30-40% in 2002. *Ouch*

if it closes above 80, good times for sure.

I’d say that Amgen “Own3d” you for 7 years. ;-)

And I was just about to pull the trigger on Amgen! It looks cheap if next years earnings materialize. I like Roche (RHHBY): owns 50% of Genentech, plus Chugai Pharma, also pays out a small but growing dividend. Pink sheets is the only drawback.

David: I don’t use “stop losses” on any of my passive investments, and I experienced much worse losses than 30-40% during the bear market — the 100% “drawdowns” in Exodus and Broadvision spring to mind. ;-)
I just try to be darned careful about what I pay for things now — that was the lesson learned from the first (and only) bear market I’ve experienced.

Ollie: Well revenues and earnings have more than tripled since I bought but the stock has gone nowhere, so you’re right, it may be cheap finally. ;-)
