Last Dozen Books Read (I)
More proof that I love lists. If I finish a book that means I liked it, and if I like a book that means I recommend it to others. Willeford is probably my favorite author. I also like Wambaugh, MacDonald, and Mortimer a lot.
- Rumpole of the Bailey, by John Mortimer
- The Deep Blue Good-by, by John D. MacDonald
- The Dogs of War, by Frederick Forsyth
- On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, by Ian Fleming
- Freakonomics, by Stephen Dubner & Steven Levitt
- Cancel All Our Vows, by John D. MacDonald
- Enough’s Enough, by Calvin Trillin
- The New Centurions, by Joseph Wambaugh
- The Onion Field, by Joseph Wambaugh
- New Hope for the Dead, by Charles Willeford
- The Way We Die Now, by Charles Willeford
- Fortune’s Formula, by William Poundstone

Chairman, what’s a good Willeford book to start off with? I’ve never read his stuff but sounds like I’d like him.

chud: Willeford’s most popular books were the “Hoke Moseley” series, which started with Miami Blues. I like his older books like Cockfighter (from the 1970s) and earlier pulp like The Shark Infested Custard. His two autobiographies — I Was Looking for a Street, and Something about a Soldier — are both fabulous. Read anything he wrote and you’ll end up reading everything he wrote.

ya haven’t gotten a chance to read THE GOLD COAST by Nelson DeMille yet, huh? You’re missing out.
Try STATE OF FEAR by Michael Crichton, too.

One Way: Funny you mention that, because I’ve been reading DeMille’s Charm School and I’m stuck 325 pages into a 650 page book. I may never finish it. ;-)
Thanks for the Crichton tip … never read him though I know he’s popular.

Just picked up Woman Chaser and I Was Looking For a Street from the library. Thanks for the tip.

the end of CHARM SCHOOL is great, almost as good as the end to INTO THIN AIR by Krakauer.
Have you ever read anything by Mario Puzo (GODFATHER)? I can recommend THE SICILIAN (great book, lousy flik), & also THE FOURTH K.

One Way: Don’t give it away because I plan to finish the Charm School sometime around 2009. Nope, haven’t read any Puzo, though I liked The Godfathe r(I was great, II was OK, III was a disgrace).

CM: I just finished The Dogs of War. It was one of those books I’d always had “on my list” but never got around to. I was prompted because you mentioned it a while back. Great read, enjoyed it immensely.

John: You’re welcome. I think Forsyth was my father’s favorite author and he used to read The Shepherd to his four kids before bed when we were little.

I live Travis McGee almost as much as I like Lucas Davenport. If you haven’t read any of John Sanford’s “Prey” series, give one a shot. It’s good stuff.

uptik: I read one Sanford book, can’t remember which one but it was a Lucas Davenport book, and wasn’t that thrilled. Maybe I read the wrong one and should give him another chance.
