Latest Addition — Chinese Zodiac — Dog

I think Zippo made this line of twelve lighters, each depicting one of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig), specifically for the Chinese market because I can’t find any information about them online. The manufacture date stamped on the bottom of the case is August 2007 (H 07).

I was born in the year of the dog and also thought that this was one of the best designs among the twelve (I also like the rooster a lot). If you know Chinese, you can see the character for dog, 狗, and not just a reclining black labrador. My collection of Zippos is growing and I must join the Zippo Nutter Club soon.

The characteristics of dogs are: Honest, intelligent, straightforward, loyal, sense of justice and fair play, attractive, amiable, unpretentious, sociable, open-minded, idealistic, moralistic, practical, affectionate, dogged. Can be cynical, lazy, cold, judgmental, pessimistic, worrier, stubborn, quarrelsome.

I am all those good things except attractive and sociable (and, according to the wife, practical) in addition to being lazy, cold (except when amiable and affectionate), and very stubborn.

    CM,

at least you attract some nice traffic to your site. Hey, and all the tgif friends you are dining with - seems to me you can be sociable, too ;-)

    Cheers,
    Markus

Markus: If you consider the dropping by of a dozen old friends “nice traffic,” then yes. I am sociable one-on-one, never in groups. I am extremely amiable to service people (bank tellers, McD cashiers, elevator operators, waitresses, towel boys, etc.) whom I have brief contact with. The trouble starts with any prolonged contact or being with anyone I don’t want to deal with — that’s when I become cold and short. A classic introvert, I like to be alone and can only deal with others on my own terms.

r: You’re a fellow Zippo nutter? I wish I could find a listing of all Zippos designed specifically for the Chinese market — that would be very useful info!

c’mon mao…….. 5 freaking years (if not more) of build-up for the politboro to “prove” themselves and no “eye of the storm” reports about the olympics? unleash the cynic……….how do the locals feel about it? and as much as i dislike cnbc…….i do enjoy their “specials” in primetime. for instance……they did a big deal over GM last night……..BLAH BLAH……but,Buick is one of the “hottest” brands of autos in china? 2 weeks of the occasional local flavor of the olympics is all we ask……..afterall, we’re all gonna be bombarded with smog reports, human rights grievances…..and the usual……hook us up dude! i’m not asking for you to actually stand out in front of the hotel while the eye makes land…..just some opinion from the locals you hang out with…….I’m sure they’re mentioning it a little……….just pass it to the left.

    Thanks

He’s a metal dog like the rest of us born in 70, well heavy metal dog if factor in his weight or taste in music, ;)

chad: A fellow American-in-Beijing has a blog at Marketwatch devoted to the Olympics… you might check that out. I’m very disconnected from things but will write a post and post pictures from the few Olympic events I attend (not sure which one or ones yet).

That dog looks more like a young calf to me. The snout is too square, although I still like the sleek design.

Never knew where I was in the Chinese Zodiac until you posted this, so I looked it up. Sounds like monkey business to me.

That’s a very cool Zippo. I really wish I smoked now. I plan to smoke my own rolled cigarettes when I hit 65. A promise I made to myself was that if I lived that long and was healthy, I could smoke until I died.

I was born in the year of the Rabbit.

@Todd: Young calf? Maybe it can double for the Year of the Cow. Now put down that banana and get back to work.

@Keith: Hand-rolled is a pain in the ass, even if you have a little machine that helps out. You either roll too tight or too loose, and the little flecks of tobacco on your tongue are a pain in the ass. There’s a reason for the modern pre-rolled cigarette and no denying that it’s a thing of technological beauty. (And I say that as a long-time MO shareholder.)

ok……..we have some rooks in the house. I’ve been rollin my own for the last 5 years. Natural American Spirit is all I roll. http://www.nascigs.com/

Yes……it is a bitch. But you learn - quicker than you think. Here’s a tip - people roll their smokes too tight, and it always goes out. So, roll it tight, just like you normally would, then right before you lick your paper, slightly let go of the smoke…..the paper will unravel itself just enough to let the air in when you place in the ash tray and won’t go out. Also, about the filter….use some cotton balls - cut them to size. And, if you smoke a lot, like I do……you’ll need a sharp pair a scissors for that clean cut at the end you put in your mouth….And yes, you need to prepare if you want to go out to the bar…..But, after a while you’ll evolve and be able to pull it all off in under a minute at the bar (minus the cotton balls - you look fucking cool rolling shit up at the bar,for a few smokes a week you can fuck the cottonballs, just put it out sooner, afterall, you’re a smoker damnit; what do you care?). But, it will look like a joint……..which is helpful in many circumstances at a bar…

Oh……..This is bringing back memories. I used to roll Drum….. They wet their shit.. I don’t know with what, so if your rolling drum or any other wet shit, DON’T roll it too tight, cause no matter how loose the paper is around it, if its tight, it won’t burn……..I use the natural american - Its pretty dry…I drop in a tiny sliver of orange and lime peel in my bag. That keeps my pouch moist until the last 1/4 or so and it does affect taste so keep those peels small. After a pouch or two, you’ll figure it out.

Oh yeah, and never be bashful around a cop, or the straights……cause it will look like you’ve smoked an ounce of pineapple express in the ashtray of your car. Let em attempt to bust your balls. It’ll be fun.

One more thing……….If you smoke marlboro, or camels……….you will want to smoke them right after you’ve put out that first one you’ve rolled yourself.

Seems like a lot - but if you live in NYC - the tax savings alone are worth it….if your so inclined. I spend $5 a week on my habit.

Sorry I had to kidnap your post Mao, but I felt an obligation after the delicious bookmark didn’t carry natural american, and after Keith posted tonight…..

chad: Loved the hijacking and thanks for the link to Natural American (was trying to remember the name and couldn’t). I should say for the record that I’m not a smoker though I do play one on TV. :)

The answer to the resurgence of stoner films is due to Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen. It’s their schtick.
