Stock Du Jour (SCHW) & Random Observations

Positive day, buying all along, even into the last minute.

Notable New Lows: JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and Interactive Brokers (IBKR). Discovered another ETF from the lows list that I don’t have on my ETF master list: UltraShort Oil & Gas (DUG) — a ticker symbol I dig. The Bespoke guys should come out with an Energy-related ETF master list, like their other excellent ETF lists.

Notable New Highs: Energies, Metals, anything related to Brazil … aQuantive (AQNT) — Microsoft pays a stupidly high price, are those guys desperate or what? Big Blue (IBM), Mirant (MIR), and Nokia (NOK). The new highs list is very long.

Charles Schwab (SCHW) was the stock du jour. (We’ve held old Schwab for about a decade through boom and bust, thick and thin — one more thing for which I can blame my baldness.)

You should call Microsoft “suckers du jour” Management acting by example-Gates gives his money away to total strangers as well.

Hudson: Well it might not be a bad idea to buy AQNT but paying an 80% premium is just dumb — even more ridiculous than Murdoch’s insane $60 offer for DJ. Microsoft is a big, bloated ship adrift at sea with their monopoly business at risk: they’re desperate. (Hurray for Google!)

What source do you use when scanning for unusual volume/activity? Thanks, Jim

Jim: Everyone asks me that … it’s custom but the closest commercially available thing is HotTrend.

MSFT is probably still bitter after being beaten in a bidding war with Google. Talk about Goodwill. Murdoch must view the Dow Jones & Comp’s intangiable assests to be worth a lot more. Of course, he has never been shy about spending money to get what he wants.

KC: Yes, after getting rich pushing tits and violence, he’d like to go out on a high note by buying a revered old name like the WSJ.

CM Love the SCHW chart and momo’s like that are what I am looking for. That would show up on a Scottrade Elite opening 5 min bar, >20K vol, >1%, naz, with little or no gap, JRCC TOPT MDRX. They didn’t show in my prmkt scan which is good

BL: How configurable is the Scottrade scanner? Are they all pre-canned screens?

Why did you Schw for such a long time. Could you have not used Fuzzy to time it a little?

CM, It’s a day’s hi/lo scan and you can adjust price, vol, % up/dn, pts up/dn from yesterday’s close, hitting 52 wk hi/lo and then you further cull that watchlist. Also Scottrade has TradeIdeas for free. Oh yea, I was at Stanford Grad 2005 for niece’s grad but missed the Job’s talk. What a place the Quad and all. Thanks for posting will reread and forward.

Rod: I don’t “time” any of our long-term investments; I just buy ‘em and forget about ‘em.

BL: OK, so this thing you use is separate from Trade Ideas, that’s what I was wondering about, thanks.
