Had one of these with my German buddy Felix who said, "There's a law in Bavaria that only hops and malt can go in beer," to which I replied, "That's coconuts!"

Slow Boat Brewery's Bourbon Double Chocolate Porter
Last of the gimmicky flavors, I think ... more chocolate than bourbon, but again, really good.
From the brewery:
Bourbon Double Chocolate Porter
(ABV 6.5%, IBU 25, SRM 40)
Hops: Chinnook, Wilamet
Malts: New Zealand, chocolate malt (lightly roasted)
TASTING NOTES:
Specialty roasted chocolate malts and rich dark chocolate nibs give this porter a double hit of cacao goodness. Bourbon flavor add a bit of oaky spice to round out the chocolate bitterness. This is dark and particularly smooth.
Slow Boat Brewery's Back Bacon Buccaneer
Yes, yes, another gimmicky flavor, but who can say no to bacon? This was really interesting, they used maple bacon so you get the full hearty breakfast thing going on, thick pancakes grilled in bacon grease, slathered in butter, and drowned in maple syrup. This is a beer I could have for breakfast. Yum!
From the brewery:
Back Bacon Buccaneer
(ABV 7.7%, IBU 20, SRM 8)
Hops: Chinook and Mount Hood and Wilamet
Malts: New Zealand base malt, German Crystal malt
TASTING NOTES:
A medium bodied, full flavored ale that tastes like summer BBQs and grandma’s pancake breakfast all in one. This beer is a refreshing, total-package sensory experience that manages to balance warm smoky bacon notes with a perfectly delicate maple finish. Ideal for the beer lover looking for a taste of home.
Slow Boat Brewery's Juniperus Pale Ale
Another in the line of gimmicky flavors ... anise, coffee, coconut, vanilla ... they're all good, though the juniper (ABV 7.2%, IBU 28, SRM 12) was berry junipery, a bit too berry for me. Lovely color!
From the brewery:
Juniperus Pale Ale
(ABV 7.2%, IBU 28, SRM 12)
Hops: Chinook and Wilamet
Malts: New Zealand malt and Crystal Malt
TASTING NOTES:
This gloriously big-bodied amber ale is brewed with juniper berries for a touch of bitterness and a refreshing floral aroma. Perfect for the botanist beer drinker and Pale Ale lover alike. This beer is guaranteed to invoke a powerful “Kum ba yah” of the senses, balancing acidic pine notes with a lightly sweet crystal malt finish.
Slow Boat Brewery's Sea Anchor Imperial Vanilla Stout
This is another beer I favor at Slow Boat ... at 8% you only need a pint of this on an empty tummy to get an edge on, not a buzz, just a vaguely happy feeling. Bitterness at 28 and those faint vanilla notes make it very pleasing. At 55元 (US$8.83) a pint it's their most expensive beer, but as I said, you really only need one to feel good.
Slow Boat Brewery's North Star Anise Stout
Big fan of this beer from Slow Boat Brewery ... it has been renamed North Star Liquorice Stout for the boobs who don't know what star anise is, thus ruining the wordplay ... anyway, at 6.2% with a bitterness rating (IBU) of 30, I can drink these all night long... waistline expanding in real-time. Beijing has a pretty active craft beer scene, for which I'm thankful. 30元 (US$4.80) a pint.
