Less Twitter, More Discord

Since my night in Twitter jail, I have been much less active on the service. I only use Tweetdeck to read a handful of private lists, unlike the old days where I really did read everything that everyone I followed tweeted.

Several things ruined Twitter for me, starting with the shift to 280 characters. The 140 character limit forced people to be thoughtful and clever when constructing a tweet, which is not the case with 280. The introduction of an RT button was also a problem, though the worst thing is injecting tweets into your stream that someone you follow *liked.*

I paid a Russian programmer a handsome sum to build a custom Twitter client for me which stripped out all of the nonsense and made the stream readable again, but Twitter quickly banned it and I took the large loss (the Russian programmer made out well, lol).

Anyway, I’m using Discord more and more now, esp. with different groups of day trading buddies, and have shifted away from Twitter. I think everyone else who trades for a living already did this years ago, but I’m slow to change.

Here’s the home screen of my phone now. Is it possible that I’ll stop using Twitter completely one day? Probably not, though I read next to nothing there now. I still like to talk to myself on there throughout the day, mostly tweeting random nonsense and things that amuse me (and no one else); I’ve never once thought about my “audience.”

My Retarded Night in Twitter Jail

Yesterday some weasel goaded me into calling him a “retard” on Twitter, then reported me to the Twitter police for “hateful conduct,” which resulted in a 12-hour ban assuming I agreed to “Delete the content that violates our rules.” Seems like overkill to me.

Twitter Cleanup April 2021

I recently hired a Russian programmer to make me a new interface for Twitter since I needed a better way to use the service … I found a lot of “dead” accounts that I follow and wanted to make a note of them here for reference:

• CoffeyGrinds @exit50 — after Twitter ban, possibly gave up trying to re-build following?

• Short VIX Capital LLC @yincity — no original tweets, just occasional retweets now

• Candice Choi @candicechoi — no original tweets, just occasional retweets now

• Rachel Beitarie @Bendilaowa — tweets almost exclusively in Hebrew now

• Jeremy Justice @jeremyjustice — no tweets since January

• Joe Cool @SnoopyJC — just tweets opening and closing trades, no value

• Shanghaiist.com @shanghaiist — last tweet July 2020

280 Killed Twitter

Since Twitter rolled out the 280 character limit, my timeline has been destroyed. All of the charm and cleverness that the service once had is gone. I follow around 295 people ... about 25 have them have quit Twitter (since T___p was elected), and a half dozen or so have unfollowed me since I said I'd block anyone who tweeted >140.

This month I will systematically go through my following list and unfollow anyone who is tweeting over 140. I might end up following no one this way, but so be it.  You can rest assured that none of my tweets will ever exceed 140 characters.
