201 minute running time which means that it’s very… long. That’s the point, it’s supposed to be excruciating, and it’s cleverly made, back when people switched the light off when they left the room. I had read a spoiler and knew how it ended, which was unfortunate. This is capital A.R.T. art for the art house crowd … a “feminist classic,” I don’t know about that, but it is scary when monotonous routines unravel. Farr recommended it.

A Queer Compulsive Game

Substitute “day trading” for backgammon in this quote from Tim Holland in Jon Bradshaw’s classic book, “Fast Company:”

114 minute running time so 20 minutes too long … there was a tragic fire in a nightclub in Romania and I’m not sure how many died, but the story here is about the number of burn victims who later died in hospital from preventable infections … the whole national healthcare system in Romania is incredibly corrupt, apparently, and this tragedy revealed some of the worst abuses (diluted disinfectants, incompetent hospital management, bribery, misappropriated funds, etc.) … the real horror is that the new Health Minister, who is a decent young guy named Vlad, is swept from power in 2015 by the corrupt right-wingers who are duly elected. I guess Romania remains something of a mafia state….

Movies Watched -- Passion Fish (1992)

135 minute running time so at least 35 minutes too long … white woman soap opera star is paralyzed and returns to family home in Louisiana where a black woman nurses her back to physical and mental health … it’s too long and predictable and boring … talk, talk, talk … it’s not terrible, but I just wasn’t interested.

Ebert writes: “John Sayles says he has been interested in such relationships between client and companion ever since he watched them develop in his own family.”

Movies Watched -- Hearts and Minds (1974)

112 minute running time … Vietnam War documentary from 1974 … it’s not super well done, but it does make guys like Westmoreland and Walt Rostow look very bad, maybe nearly as awful as they really were. A total debacle and most of the guys responsible for it never owned up to it. History repeats itself.
