121 minute running time which means, yes, it was 20 minutes too long … the courtroom scene at the end, which lasts about half an hour, really kills the momentum … but in many ways this is a classic, an unusual movie for the time, based on Teddy Dreiser’s book, “An American Tragedy.” Social class, alienation, ambition are all interesting ideas that are explored … the first two-thirds of the movie are green-go, but I don’t know if I can recommend it from start to finish.
